Beef Stroganoff

Cervantes once penned “Hunger is the best sauce in the world”. In the short time that I've been cooking, I've learned that improvisation and creativity are often the best (and only) ingredients to be found in my kitchen. Many a time, Bryan and I have had to draw upon our creative abilities, invoke the mighty gods of “wing it” and, in an act that many culinary experts would consider heretical, create a cheap yet, delicious imitation of the real thing.

  1. Brown the beef in a medium to large skillet and drain.
  2. Add black pepper, onion, bullion cubes, water, and garlic to beef and sautee until onions are reduced (lightly browned).
  3. Add in mushrooms and simmer for 10 minutes.
  4. In a mixing bowel combine cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce; mix well until blended.
  5. Combine cream of mushroom mixture and ground beef in a large saucepan and simmer for 15 minutes.
  6. Add sour cream and simmer for another 5 minutes.
  7. Remove from heat and let stand for 5 minutes.
  8. Serve over egg noodles.

Despite not technically being beef stroganoff, it was ten flavors of awesome. That's right, a full ten. With a little time, creativity, and determination I learned that sometimes it's not about duplicating a great recipe, it's about cheating so well you can't tell the difference. At the very least you've made something you can call your own; if you're really lucky you might even make it better.
